Simple estimate of fission rate during JCO criticality accident

چکیده

The fission rate during JCO criticality accident is estimated from fission-product (FP) radioactivities in a uranium solution sample taken from the preparation basin 20 days after the accident. The FP radioactivity data are taken from a report by JAERI released in the Accident Investigation Committee. The total fission number is found quite dependent on the FP radioactivities and estimated to be about 4×1016 per liter, or 2×1018 per 16kgU (assuming uranium concentration 278.9 g/liter). On the contrary, the time dependence of the fission rate is rather insensitive to the FP radioactivities. Hence, it is difficult to determine the fission number in the initial burst from the radioactivity data.

Introduction to Criticality Accident Evaluation

So far 22 criticality accidents have been reported (McLaughlin et al., 2000) including JCO accident in Japan. All cases took place with fuel solution or slurry except one case of metal fuel. It was not clear that what was actually happening during those criticality accidents except the JCO accident, for which a fission power profile was reproduced from a gammaray monitoring data (Tonoike et al....

Summary of the JCO criticality accident in Tokai-mura and a dose assessment.

A criticality accident occurred on September 30, 1999, in a conversion test facility at the JCO Tokai site. The accident was triggered by pouring an 18.8% enriched uranyl nitrate solution into a precipitation vessel beyond the critical mass. The accident continued for about 19 hours before the criticality could be stopped. during which time neutrons and gamma-rays were emitted continuously due ...

Transport calculation of neutrons leaked to the surroundings of the facilities by the JCO criticality accident in Tokai-mura.

A transport calculation of the neutrons leaked to the environment by the JCO criticality accident was carried out based on three-dimensional geometrical models of the buildings within the JCO territory. Our work started from an initial step to simulate the leakage process of neutrons from the precipitation tank, and proceeded to a step to calculate the neutron propagation throughout the JCO fac...

محاسبات دز نوترون در حادثه بحرانیت JCO در Tokaimura با کد MCNPX

Recognizing the accident and estimating absorbed doses at the incident time, is one of the requirements for radiation safety. The aim of this paper is designing a model for assessment of nuclear criticality effectiveness in non-reactor units and evaluation of the effect of variation of distances on dose rate and neutron energy spectrum. In this study neutron dose-rate was simulated between 0.5m...

Chromosome aberration analysis in persons exposed to low-level radiation from the JCO criticality accident in Tokai-mura.

Chromosome aberrations were studied in peripheral blood lymphocytes of 43 persons who were exposed to low-level radiation of mixed neutrons and gamma-rays resulting from the JCO criticality accident. When the age-adjusted frequencies of dicentric and ring chromosomes were compared with the dose calibration curve established in vitro for 60Co gamma-rays as a reference radiation, a significant co...
